As our thoughts turn towards the festive season, we have been looking at how to bring some light and warmth to your Christmas table. What caught our eye were these lovely multi-coloured ball-shaped candles from art and design company British Colour Standard.
Unlike many mass-produced candles on the market, these are hand poured in Indonesia in an all-female fair trade cooperative so are a genuine artisan product. As a result, no two candles are quite the same but, along with their striking colours, this is what we think makes them so distinctive. We also like the fact that they are made from 100% stearin wax with no animal derived products and use ecological colour dyes.
The story behind the colours goes back to 1931 when the original British Colour Standard was created. It was made up of a series of colour dictionaries which were used to standardise colour. Pigments were dyed onto strips of ribbon and were given evocative names from the natural world including animals, flora and fauna as well as semi-precious stones and spices. These colours have now been accurately scanned and are being used in the collection, along with their original names such as Opaline, Marigold and Guardsman Red.
There are two sizes available so, whilst they look great individually, if you group them together you can create a real feature at the centre of a table. Perfect for creating that festive atmosphere. With burn times of up to 50 hours for the large size and 25 for the small we think that they are good value compared with traditional tealights. Each candle comes packed in its own recyclable Kraft gift box so they make ideal Christmas presents for friends and family.
